Hardie siding

Hardie® board siding

Fiber cement lap siding and trim, installed with the attention to flashing, clearances and finish work that siding depends on.

Hardie siding, done the carpenter's way.

Fiber cement siding is a mix of cement, sand and cellulose fibers. It is made to stand up to moisture, rot and termites, and it holds paint well, which is why it is a popular choice for homes that see heavy sun and rain.

What makes siding last is mostly what you cannot see when the job is done: the weather barrier behind it, the flashing over windows and doors, the gaps the manufacturer calls for at trim and ground level, and fasteners placed where they belong. That is carpentry, and it is where Coastline Innovations focuses.

The photos on this page are Coastline jobs: old siding stripped off, rotted framing and trim replaced, walls wrapped, and new lap and board and batten siding installed.

What a siding project can include

Lap sidingHorizontal planks in smooth or wood-grain textures, the most common fiber cement profile.
Board and battenVertical panels with battens over the seams, a clean coastal look.
Trim and cornersWindow, door and corner trim that frames the siding and sheds water.
Soffit and fasciaFinishing the roof edge so the whole exterior reads as one job.
Repair and replacementReplacing damaged sections or old siding, including the rotted framing that sometimes hides behind it.

Planning a siding job

  • What is under the old siding: damaged sheathing or framing is fixed before new siding goes on.
  • Color: fiber cement can come factory-finished or be painted after installation.
  • Permits and HOA approval: exterior changes often need one or both.
  • Windows and doors: siding time is the right time to address trim and flashing around them.

Questions

Hardie siding FAQ

Is Hardie board the same as fiber cement?

Hardie® is a brand of fiber cement siding made by James Hardie. Fiber cement is the material; several manufacturers make it.

Can you replace just part of my siding?

Often. Send photos of the area and the rest of the wall so the profile and exposure can be matched.

Why does siding installation matter so much?

Fiber cement performs well when it is installed to the manufacturer's instructions: clearances, flashing, fastening and sealing at the right places. Those details are what keep water out.
