Pergolas and shade

Pergolas and shade structures

Freestanding and attached pergolas that turn a patch of sun into a place you actually use.

Pergolas and shade, done the carpenter's way.

In South Florida, shade decides whether a backyard gets used. A pergola gives a patio or deck structure and filtered shade, and it can be built to carry a cover, fans or lights later.

A pergola is pure carpentry: posts, beams and rafters that have to line up, stay square and look good from below, where everyone sees them.

The photo below is a Coastline pergola: heavy posts, doubled beams and close-set rafters over a backyard by the water.

Ways to build one

FreestandingStands on its own posts anywhere in the yard: over a patio, a hot tub or a seating area.
AttachedTied to the house to extend the living space off a back door.
Shade levelRafter spacing, slats or a cover change how much sun comes through.
MaterialsPressure-treated wood, cedar-tone stains, or lower-maintenance materials. Ask what fits.

Things to think through

  • Where the sun is at the time of day you will sit there.
  • Footings: posts need solid footings sized for wind.
  • Permits and HOA rules for structures in the yard.
  • Future add-ons: fans, lights or a cover are easier to plan for up front.

Questions

Pergolas and shade FAQ

How big should a pergola be?

Big enough for the furniture you will put under it plus room to walk around. Measure your table or seating and add the dimensions in the estimate form.

Can a pergola give full shade?

An open pergola gives filtered shade. Tighter slats or a cover add more. Tell us how much shade you want.
